The staff of Frederick Community College's Continuing Education and Customized Training (CECT) department has created a scholarship together as an extension of the department's mission to strengthen the community by educating its citizens. The CECT staff seeks to empower students by helping them move forward in their personal and professional lives by taking a course of study for career training, professional development or personal enrichment from a varied and accessible menu of programs.
"We believethat the community is enriched by individuals who participate in meaningful education throughout their lifespan. Therefore, we wanted to create this scholarship to help make education available to students with financial need," said David Croghan, associate vice president of learning and dean for CECT.
Scholarships will be available to residents of Frederick County enrolled in a Continuing Education course or program at FCC. The amount of the scholarship may be adjusted according to the recipient's class or program, as CE programs vary in requirements of time, number of classes and costs. Scholarships will be awarded to students with financial need as determined by the application process. Recipients enrolled in a multi-course CE program must be in good academic standing.
Continuing Education and Customized Training programs include classes in adult basic education, allied health, business, child care licensing, construction and building trades, driver education, gerontology, green and LEED construction and exam training, information technology, motorcycle safety, personal enrichment, professional licensures, Kids On Campus and the Institute for Learning in Retirement.

For the second year, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Landscape Services will partner with Recycling Enterprises to encourage recycling on Husker football game days. The effort will focus on parking lots and walkways on property around Memorial Stadium -- and you can help.
UNL is seeking volunteers to help walk parking lots offering green recycling bags for fans to recycle plastics and aluminum. The fans then leave the bags for volunteers to pick up after the game begins. Recycling bins will also be locatednext to waste containers along high-traffic pedestrian walkways leading to Memorial Stadium.
"We think it will allow people to be environmentally responsible with their game day celebrating," said Rich Wahl, construction manager for Landscape Services. "This is a positive way Big Red fans can contribute to recycling and support a sustainable campus environment at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln."
The effort still needs volunteers. To arrange to volunteer and find out where to meet to get supplies and instructions, contact the recycling coordinator at (402) 472-9139 or by e-mail.
